Revealing the Obvious

It is curious how comparing what you know to be the same still reveals more that you would miss. For instance - why does not Job get double the sons and daughters? Because in this epic parable, he received the same lads and lasses back. Notice the two differences in the words between verse 1.02 describing Job for the first time and verse 42.08. The word for 7 is different. And the children are not born but simply 'are' - in chapter 42. Job's experience has affected his children. One might say that the lads (unnamed) are doubly born and the lasses are named and made inheritors. And his wife did not have to bear another 10 children. You will notice that her verse enters this comparison only through ברך the word to bless.

(All these tables are exercises for me in recognition. I tried automating the coloring today but the experiment was a failure. Sometimes I could colour more - but you too can feel free to fill in the blanks or confirm my vision. When learning Hebrew, rules are taught first and should come last so you experience has somewhere to put them. The aural and the visual recognition are the hardest things to learn and need the most practice. Singing is a good way to learn and memorize.)

ח וַיֹּאמֶר יְהוָה אֶל הַשָּׂטָן הֲשַׂמְתָּ לִבְּךָ עַל עַבְדִּי אִיּוֹב כִּי אֵין כָּמֹהוּ בָּאָרֶץ אִישׁ תָּם וְיָשָׁר יְרֵא אֱלֹהִים וְסָר מֵרָע	and יְהוָה said to the accuser have you set out in your heart concerning my servant Job? י וַיֹּאמֶר אֵלֶיהָ כְּדַבֵּר אַחַת הַנְּבָלוֹת תְּדַבֵּרִי גַּם אֶת הַטּוֹב נְקַבֵּל מֵאֵת הָאֱלֹהִים וְאֶת הָרָע לֹא נְקַבֵּל בְּכָל זֹאת לֹא חָטָא אִיּוֹב בִּשְׂפָתָיו	But he said to her You speak as one of the foolish women might speak Indeed, even the good shall we take from God and not take the evil In all this Job did not sin with his lips	2.10	אחת	42.11	יא וַיָּבֹאוּ אֵלָיו כָּל אֶחָיו וְכָל אַחְיֹתָיו וְכָל יֹדְעָיו לְפָנִים וַיֹּאכְלוּ עִמּוֹ לֶחֶם בְּבֵיתוֹ וַיָּנֻדוּ לוֹ וַיְנַחֲמוּ אֹתוֹ עַל כָּל הָרָעָה אֲשֶׁר הֵבִיא יְהוָה עָלָיו וַיִּתְּנוּ לוֹ אִישׁ קְשִׂיטָה אֶחָת וְאִישׁ נֶזֶם זָהָב אֶחָד	And all his brothers and sisters came to him and all who knew his face and they ate bread with him in his house and they lamented for him and comforted him about all the evil that יְהוָה had made come on him and they gave him each one qasita and each one gold ring.
יא וַיִּשְׁמְעוּ שְׁלֹשֶׁת רֵעֵי אִיּוֹב אֵת כָּל הָרָעָה הַזֹּאת הַבָּאָה עָלָיו וַיָּבֹאוּ אִישׁ מִמְּקֹמוֹ אֱלִיפַז הַתֵּימָנִי וּבִלְדַּד הַשּׁוּחִי וְצוֹפַר הַנַּעֲמָתִי וַיִּוָּעֲדוּ יַחְדָּו לָבוֹא לָנוּד לוֹ וּלְנַחֲמוֹ	When Job's three friends heard of all the evil all that had come upon him they came, each from his own place Eliphaz the Temanite and Bildad the Shuhite and Zophar the Naamathite for they had gathered together to come to lament with him and to comfort him	2.11	ההנעמתי שׁוחי ובלדד	42.09	ט וַיֵּלְכוּ אֱלִיפַז הַתֵּימָנִי וּבִלְדַּד הַשּׁוּחִי צֹפַר הַנַּעֲמָתִי וַיַּעֲשׂוּ כַּאֲשֶׁר דִּבֶּר אֲלֵיהֶם יְהוָה וַיִּשָּׂא יְהוָה אֶת פְּנֵי אִיּוֹב	and they went, Eliphaz the Temanite and Bildad the Shuhite and Zophar the Naamathite and they did as the word of יְהוָה God and יְהוָה lifted up the face of Job.

יב וַיִּשְׂאוּ אֶת עֵינֵיהֶם מֵרָחוֹק וְלֹא הִכִּירֻהוּ וַיִּשְׂאוּ קוֹלָם וַיִּבְכּוּ וַיִּקְרְעוּ אִישׁ מְעִלוֹ וַיִּזְרְקוּ עָפָר עַל רָאשֵׁיהֶם הַשָּׁמָיְמָה	and when they lifted up their eyes from afar and did not recognize him they lifted up their voice and wept and they tore each one his robe and they threw dust on their heads towards the heavens	2.12	עפר	42.06	ו עַל-כֵּן אֶמְאַס וְנִחַמְתִּי עַל-עָפָר וָאֵפֶר	therefore I refuse and I am comforted in dust and ashes
יג וַיֵּשְׁבוּ אִתּוֹ לָאָרֶץ שִׁבְעַת יָמִים וְשִׁבְעַת לֵילוֹת וְאֵין דֹּבֵר אֵלָיו דָּבָר כִּי רָאוּ כִּי גָדַל הַכְּאֵב מְאֹד	and they sat with him on the earth seven days and seven nights and none spoke a word to him for they saw that very great was his pain	2.13	דבר דבר	42.07 +42.09	ז וַיְהִי אַחַר דִּבֶּר יְהוָה אֶת הַדְּבָרִים הָאֵלֶּה אֶל אִיּוֹב וַיֹּאמֶר יְהוָה אֶל אֱלִיפַז הַתֵּימָנִי חָרָה אַפִּי בְךָ וּבִשְׁנֵי רֵעֶיךָ כִּי לֹא דִבַּרְתֶּם אֵלַי נְכוֹנָה כְּעַבְדִּי אִיּוֹב	And it happened after יְהוָה had spoken the words - these ones - to Job that יְהוָה said to Eliphaz the Temanite: my wrath burns in you and your two friends - for you have not spoken of me what is prepared as has my servant Job.
יג וַיֵּשְׁבוּ אִתּוֹ לָאָרֶץ שִׁבְעַת יָמִים וְשִׁבְעַת לֵילוֹת וְאֵין דֹּבֵר אֵלָיו דָּבָר כִּי רָאוּ כִּי גָדַל הַכְּאֵב מְאֹד	and they sat with him on the earth seven days and seven nights and none spoke a word to him for they saw that very great was his pain	2.13	ימים	42.17	יז וַיָּמָת אִיּוֹב זָקֵן וּשְׂבַע יָמִים	And Job died old and sated of days.
